Sacred Directions I pray to them, they are part of my life each and
every moment of the day. They influence us in ways we may not even think
about or perhaps take for granted. This morning I share with you …to
help open the pathways that they deliver messages, energy to each of
you… I will explain my interpretation, the way I have been taught… and
we will walk them with our hearts and our minds.
I begin with the North….
North (White) Buffalo – Northern Winds of the winter season.
Cleansing energies from Our Ancestors. They cause the leaves to fall and
the earth to rest under a blanket of snow. If we learn to stand strong
in the face of these winds like the Mighty Buffalo as it faces a storm,
we will learn patience and endurance. North is about the trials we must
face as Human, giving us the strength and perseverance of our Ancestors.
It represents Wisdom of the Ancestors, Higher Power, guidance.
South (Red) Coyote – The southern sky is when Father Sun is at His
most powerful, it is a time fro warmth and growing. Father Sun’s reach
is strong as he draws life from the Great Mother Earth. It is said the
life of all things comes from the south. This is often related to the
feminine energies, to be in touch with the softer side of things. It is a
place of birth and rebirth. When people pass into the spirit world,
they travel the Universal path back to the south – returning from where
they came. It represents healing, growing, youth.
East (Yellow) Eagle- The direction that Sunlight begins our days.
Father Sun rises in the east and spreads his energy his warmth across
the lands and waters . Beginning a new day, the beginning of
understanding as the light shines so we may see things with fresh and
clear eyes. At the root of the teachings, East stands for wisdom’s
shared to help us live better lives. Traditional people rise in the
morning to pray facing the dawn, asking Creator for wisdom and
understanding. It represents newness, beginnings, new awareness, dawn.
West (Black) Bear – As Father Sun begins to rest day ends. For this
reason, west signifies the end of life. Black Elk once stated, “… toward
the setting sun of his life.” The great Thunderbird lives in the west
and sends thunder and rain from its direction. For this reason, the west
is also the source of water: rain, lakes, streams and rivers. Nothing
can live without water, so from the west is the source of life and
renewal. It represents Inner vision, reflection, soul-searching,
endings.
When the Lakota pray with the Sacred Pipe, they add two other
directions: Sky and Earth. The Great Spirit Creator dwells high above
like an eagle in the sky; this direction’s color is blue. Earth is our
Mother and Grandmother from whom we receive our nourishment. The color
of this direction is green for all growing things.
And I add Within as all things and life, we too are Sacred. As we are a combination of all that is, as we are all related.
I ask that today and all days ahead, that we recognize and honor the
Sacred Directions. That in doing so we share in the Wisdom’s that they
offer to teach us all. That the healing energies sent reach and flow
into open channels within each and everyone of us, so that we attain
Spiritual, Emotional and physical balance.
So my wish to you all today is to honor the Sacred directions, open
yourselves and listen to what they have to teach us. Our Ancestors have
Wisdoms that they have shared for generations, and we each have those
seeds locked deep within each and everyone of us. Allow those seeds to
open, to bloom and to grow into positive lives for all of us.
Blessings,
